Common uses

This medication is used to treat fungal infections of the skin, hair, fingernails and toenails.

Before using

Some medical conditions may interact with Grifulvin V Microsize/Ultramicrosize Tablets. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:
• if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
• if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
• if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
• if you have liver disease or lupus

Directions

Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor. For the best absorption, it is best taken with or after a meal containing a moderate amount of fat. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about specific dietary instructions, especially if you are on a low-fat diet.
The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. In children, dosage is also based on weight. The length of treatment depends on the type of infection you have. It may take several weeks to months to complete treatment for infections of the scalp, feet, and body. Nail infections may require several months to a year or longer to treat.
Antifungal medications work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. Therefore, take this drug at evenly spaced intervals.
Continue to take this medication for the full prescribed length of treatment even if symptoms improve after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow the fungus to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection.
Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

Cautions

Tell your prescriber or health care professional if your symptoms do not begin to improve in 1 to 2 weeks. Some fungal infections need many weeks or months of treatment to cure. Use your medicine regularly for as long as your prescriber or health care professional tells you to.

Oral contraceptives that contain estrogen may not work properly while you take griseofulvin. Use an additional method of birth control while you take griseofulvin and for one month afterwards.

You may get drowsy or dizzy; until you know how griseofulvin affects you, do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness. Alcohol may make you more drowsy, and increase flushing and a rapid heartbeat. Avoid alcoholic drinks.

Keep out of the sun, or wear protective clothing and use a sunscreen. Do not use sun lamps or sun tanning beds or booths.

To help prevent reinfection, wear freshly washed cotton, not synthetic, clothing.
After bathing make sure your skin is quite dry. Fungal infections like moist conditions. Do not walk about barefoot. You can use an antifungal powder once or twice a day.

Possible side effects

Headache, diarrhea, nausea, gas, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, trouble sleeping, or increased sensitivity to sunlight (sunburn-like effect) may occur. If these symptoms persist or worsen, contact your doctor promptly. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: skin rash, hives, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

If you take too much

Seek emergency medical attention. Symptoms of a griseofulvin overdose are not well known but might include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, numbness and tingling, and confusion.
